The movie “Do the right thing” is directed, written, and produced by a very famous African American director ,Spike Lee. This movie has a very strong representation of the ethnic conflict. This is a movie not only demonstrate the oppugnations and complaints, blacks and ethnic status of unequal treatment in the United States. The tittle itself is already a question and also as a wake up message to his ethnic group. What is the right thing? Everyone has their own situation. If this is the right thing for you, it may not be a right thing for other people.
In the movie, Sal’s wall of frames have became an important element in the movie. That wall has displayed many photoes of the white celebrities. The sign of the photographs have been enlarge in the movie and also the photos have lead the black to dissatisfaction. Sal owns this pizza shop so he has the right to hang whatever he likes on his wall. Maybe this is the way how he express his feelings. But for the blacks, they think it is a provocation for them.
The wall brings the discontentment into the the movie at the beginning. ML and Sal had a fight because of the photographs. During the movie, the photos on the wall have been mentioned again and again. Piling up the anger from ethnic conflict and racial antagonism to give a result of to cause destruction to both sides. The photo which Smiley put up on Sal’s wall also has been enlarged at the end of the film. That is a photo of Martin Luther King Jr and Markem X. That photo gives us a hint at the end and also make us think. Martin Luther King Jr. accused the violence but Markem X used the violence with violence the way to seek self-defense. In what position of standing in the end is how the so-called “Do the Right Thing”?

Hi Jun
ReplyDeleteYou entries keep getting better and better. The discussion of Do The Right Thing is very good. The question of what is the right thing to do is exactly the right question to ask. I do have a sense that you are undertaking research in preparation for these entries, which IS the right thing and you are also offering personal opinions arising out of that research and in response to the images and ideas you select. There is some odd spelling but this does not get in the way of my understanding. Keep up the excellent effort you are making. thanks Grant
